As Anzac Day approaches, Families Australia reflects on the vital role families play in supporting wellbeing across our communities. We recognise families in all their diversity and the experiences that shape care, connection and resilience, including for families connected to military service. These lived experiences highlight the need for inclusive, family-focused systems that support wellbeing over time.
The following reflections from the Veteran Family Commissioner, Annabelle Wilson, speak powerfully to these shared experiences of family life, support and resilience:
“As Veteran Family Commissioner, I consistently hear from families across the country about the importance of honouring the service of our soldiers, sailors and aviators. In meeting so many families, I believe we must also pay tribute to the strength of partners, children and wider family who support that service in both small and significant ways every day.
Families carry service through absence, uncertainty and care, and that deserves acknowledgment. It is heartening to see this reflected in family-focused initiatives, from local Anzac Day gatherings at Veteran and Family Hubs, such as the Queanbeyan Hub, to family days hosted by ex-service organisations like Home Front. These moments remind us that this day is for families too.”

Next Thursday 30 April, I will host the policy forum, Navigating Systems: Tracking the Settlement Journey for Multicultural Young People, along with representatives from Settlement Services International (SSI) and the Multicultural Youth Advocacy Network Australia (MYAN). Please also save the date for 27 May 2026 (9.30am – 11.00am) for the Annual Meeting of the National Coalition on Child Safety and Wellbeing. This meeting will contribute to broader policy discussions ahead of the development of the second set of Action Plans for Safe and Supported and provide members with an opportunity to shape national directions.
