Preparations for Families Week are well underway, and it has been fantastic to see the response so far. Already we are approaching 100 registered events so if you are planning an event, now is the time to register. Sign up by 27 April to guarantee delivery of your free merchandise – choose from A2 posters and pencils, along with beach balls and temporary tattoos, which are new for 2026. Families Week is all about recognising the vital role families play in strong, connected communities, and we are looking forward to seeing the many ways it will be celebrated this year.
On the policy front, Families Australia, together with the National Foster Care Sustainability Group, lodged a submission to the Inquiry into the operation and adequacy of the National Employment Standards. This submission highlights the pressures facing statutory kinship and foster carers and reiterates the group’s call for equitable leave entitlements.
Last Sunday’s International Women’s Day was also a moment to reflect on the extraordinary leadership and contribution of women across the child and family sector. I continue to learn from, and be inspired by, the many talented and dedicated women across the Families Australia team and Board whose work continues to shape our impact.
Finally, I would like to acknowledge and celebrate the remarkable contribution of Pat Turner AM, who is stepping down as Chief Executive Officer of the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation. Her leadership has strengthened the authority of Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations and delivered lasting, community-led improvements in health and wellbeing for families and children across Australia.
